Dear Glenburnie Families,

Welcome to a new school year! We hope everyone had a wonderful summer and found time to relax, recharge and enjoy time with family and friends. As we prepare to welcome students back to Glenburnie, there is a real sense of excitement throughout the school.

The beginning of September gives all of us a fresh start - new classrooms, new learning, new friendships and new experiences. At Glenburnie, we want every student to feel welcomed, supported and connected - a place where students know they belong and are encouraged to learn, grow and be the best version of themselves.

Strong relationships between students, staff and families are an important part of what makes Glenburnie such a special community, and we look forward to continuing those partnerships throughout the year.

First Day Arrival & Safety

To help make the first morning as safe and smooth as possible, we strongly encourage families whose children are eligible for bus transportation to have students take the bus on the first day. School parking lots and drop-off areas can become especially congested on the first morning, with buses arriving, families dropping students off and staff helping children get to the right place. Reducing vehicle traffic helps us create a safer environment for everyone.

Teachers and staff will be outside to welcome students, gather them into their classes and begin lining students up for a safe and organized entry into the school. If you are driving your child to school, we ask that you drop them off and keep your goodbye brief. We know the first day can bring some big feelings, but a warm, confident and quick goodbye is often best for children and also helps keep our parking and drop-off areas moving safely for other families and buses. Thank you for helping us start the year safely and positively.

Medical Safety Plans & Student Medication

The safety and well-being of our students is extremely important. Families of students with a medical condition such as anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes or epilepsy are required to complete an updated Plan of Care each school year.

Please ensure that all medical information, emergency contacts and required medication are current and provided to the school as soon as possible. If your child requires medication or a medical procedure during the school day, additional authorization forms may also be required.

If you have questions about which forms are required for your child, please contact the school office and we will be happy to help.

Thank You for a Great Start

Getting a school ready for September takes a tremendous amount of work, much of it happening quietly behind the scenes during the summer.

A special thank you goes to our Head Caretaker, Sherri Holland, for all of her work throughout the summer preparing the school and helping ensure the building is ready to welcome students and staff back.

Thank you as well to our Office Administrator, Kim Merkley, for the organization, communication and countless details that go into preparing for a successful school start-up.

Our teaching and support staff have also been busy preparing classrooms, organizing materials and planning for students. We greatly appreciate the time, care and energy our entire Glenburnie team puts into creating a welcoming and engaging place for children.

A Note About Classes and Staffing

As happens every September, our current class organization and staffing are based on the student enrolment information available as we begin the year. During the first couple of weeks of school, enrolment is reviewed across the Board and staffing allocations or class organizations can sometimes change.

We understand that changes can be difficult for students and families. If any changes are required at Glenburnie, we will keep families informed and share information as soon as we are able. Our priority will always be to make any necessary transitions as smooth as possible for students.

Join Our School Advisory Council (SAC)

Our School Advisory Council is a great way for parents and caregivers to become more connected to Glenburnie and have a voice in our school community. SAC brings families and school staff together to share information, exchange ideas and support opportunities for students.

You do not need previous experience, and you do not need to commit to attending every meeting to become involved. New members and new ideas are always welcome. More information about the date and time of our first SAC meeting will be shared with families soon.

Important Dates for 2026-2027

Student Progress and Reporting

Teachers will communicate with families throughout the year about student learning, progress, strengths and next steps. Elementary students receive a Progress Report in the fall, a Term 1 Provincial Report Card in the winter and a Term 2 Provincial Report Card at the end of the school year.

Specific 2026-2027 report distribution dates will be shared with families once they are confirmed.

Please scroll to the end of this document to see some photos from around the school. You may notice that not all students are included in these pictures. This may be because some students prefer not to have their photo taken, or because families have indicated “no” to photo sharing on social media through the student registration or verification form. If you would like to review or update your child’s photo permissions, please feel free to contact the office — we’d be happy to help.

Every Thursday - Second nutrition break - Volunteers will visit classrooms to distribute "hot food" items donated by the Food Sharing Project. We never know what food option we will receive. Please advise your child and your child's teacher if you do not want them to participate. At this time The Food Sharing Project program is not able to provide recipes.

Calling All Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers that would like to help out around the school. If you have a special skill set that you can offer or are willing to host any type of club (e.g. checkers, puzzles, embroidery, yo-yo, dance, singing, crafts, board games, skipping, yoga, knitting, crochet, colouring) we would love to have you join our Den. Our time frames are school days during recess 11:10-11:30 or 1:30-1:50.

Volunteers can be parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, or neighbours. A CPIC (vulnerable sector) is required only if providing direct supervision to students.

Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Heidi Carfa at 613-331-2852 if you are interested in helping in any way.

Bringing Food Into the School

Glenburnie Public School’s approach to food brought into the school is guided by Limestone District School Board Administrative Procedures and reflects our commitment to student well-being, equity, and high-quality learning environments.

During the school day, our priority is learning. To support this, Glenburnie is continuing to move toward celebrations and special events that do not involve food being brought into the classroom. This approach helps maintain consistent routines, protects instructional time, and ensures that all students can participate fully and comfortably in shared experiences.

Celebrations that focus on connection rather than food—such as games, performances, creative activities, spirit days, or community-building experiences—support a strong sense of belonging and reflect our values of inclusion, dignity, and equity. These experiences allow every child to feel part of the moment in a meaningful way.

Reminder that our school is a Nut Aware School. Due to some very serious allergies, we ask that we be considered a NUT-FREE ZONE. No foods with peanuts or tree nuts should be consumed on school premises.

The Food Sharing Project Update

During the 2025–2026 school year, The Food Sharing Project supported every LDSB school by providing nutritious food and resources to students each day. On average, more than 14,000 meals and snacks were served each week, over 530,000 throughout the year, with weekly food orders reaching approximately $17,500.

This support is increasingly important as many families continue to face food insecurity.  This support is increasingly important as many families continue to face food insecurity.  The Food Sharing Project is launching their “Nine Cents is Nonsense” campaign, advocating for support from government to increase the funding provided.
