Dear Families,
Welcome March and welcome Spring weather! February saw wonderful learning focussed on Black History and Futures Month. Classes engaged in a variety of learning activities including highlighting the accomplishments of Black Canadians in the areas of science, literature, and the arts. Throughout the school, student work related to their learning could be seen through visual art displays, in writing, and through responses to readings and mentor texts. What a great month!
Staff continue to engage in professional development to support student learning. Kindergarten to Grade 2 teachers have engaged in learning about language screeners and Acadience training. These assessment tools help teachers to monitor student learning and progress in the area of literacy. We also continue to use math diagnostics and various learning and teaching tools in order to identify where our students fall on the math continuum. Grade 3 and 6 teachers will be meeting to set out a plan for the provincial assessments that will take place later in the spring. We continue to focus on using the curriculum while exposing students to diverse and engaging questions and problems. We are proud of the progress that students are making!
We have been challenged throughout the month of February with bus cancellations and some slippery, muddy conditions on our school yard which required some changes at recess times for student and staff safety. Sending your child with some extra socks, mittens and splash pants will help to keep them comfortable with the changing conditions. This weather, while presenting some ups and downs also means that a new season is around the corner! Just a friendly reminder that students need to have indoor shoes. Students cannot wear wet boots into classrooms or the gym as it is a slipping/safety hazard. If you need help with indoor shoes please contact the school office.
Please note that the School Council is organizing a cheese fundraiser on School Day as well as a Movie night on Friday March 22. Also, there are is a new date for a Murder Mystery evening. Information is below. Wishing all of our Glenburnie families a wonderful March break. See you back at school on March 18th!
Yours in Education,
Jennifer Osborne, Principal
