Glenburnie Public School Family Newsletter

A Wonderful Evening at Glenburnie

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Open House on Thursday evening.

It was wonderful to see so many students proudly showing their families around the school, introducing teachers and staff, and sharing some of the spaces where they spend their days learning and growing. Events like this are a great reminder of what makes Glenburnie such a special community.

A big thank you as well to our School Advisory Council for helping us host the evening. The drinks and coffee were a real hit, and we really appreciated SAC helping make the evening feel so welcoming for our families.

Thank you to everyone who came out and spent some time with us. It was a great way to begin October together.

Celebrating Our EQAO Results

Our latest EQAO results have been released, and there is a great deal for our Glenburnie community to celebrate.

Grade 3

Our Grade 3 students achieved:

  • Reading – 100%
  • Writing – 100%
  • Mathematics – 100%

That means 100% of our Grade 3 students met or exceeded the provincial standard in all three areas.

This is an exceptional accomplishment and reflects a tremendous amount of hard work by our students and staff.

Grade 6

Our Grade 6 students achieved:

  • Reading – 92.3%
  • Writing – 100%
  • Mathematics – 76.9%

All three Grade 6 results are well above the provincial standard, with 100% of students meeting or exceeding the standard in Writing.

We are incredibly proud of our students for the effort, perseverance and learning these results represent. We are equally proud of our staff. Strong results like these are not created by a few weeks of preparation for an assessment. They are built over time through strong teaching, careful assessment, targeted support and students who are willing to work hard at their learning.

EQAO is only one measure of student achievement, but these results provide a wonderful opportunity to recognize the excellent work happening throughout Glenburnie.

We would also like to thank our School Advisory Council for continuing to support student learning through the purchase of resources and materials for our school. That partnership helps us provide additional tools and opportunities for students and staff.

Congratulations to our students and staff. These are results our entire Glenburnie community can be very proud of!

Information About Field Trips and Athletic Opportunities for the 2026-2027 School Year

Dear Families,

At Glenburnie Public School and Joyceville Public School, we are committed to providing students with meaningful learning experiences through field trips, athletic events, tournaments, cultural experiences, and extracurricular activities. These opportunities enrich learning, build school community, and create memorable experiences for students.

Throughout the school year, families may be asked to contribute toward some of the costs associated with these opportunities. Depending on the activity, costs may include transportation, registration fees, admission fees, facility rentals, or other event-specific expenses.

Our goal is always to keep fees as low as possible. Whenever possible, school student activity funding, school-generated funds, fundraising proceeds, and School Advisory Council (SAC) contributions will be used to offset costs for families. The Board has also provided schools with funding intended to help reduce the amount families are asked to pay while continuing to offer valuable opportunities for students.

We will provide as much advance notice as possible when fees are required. In some cases, particularly with athletic events and tournaments, schools receive information, entry deadlines, and cost details on shorter timelines. When that occurs, we will communicate with families as quickly as possible so that students do not miss the opportunity to participate.

For each activity requiring payment, families will receive information outlining the event and any associated costs. We are committed to being transparent about fees while continuing to seek ways to reduce costs whenever possible.

Most importantly, we do not want financial circumstances to prevent students from participating in school opportunities. If the cost of an activity presents a challenge for your family, please contact me directly and confidentially so that we can work together to support your child.

Upcoming Cross Country Event

Students participating in the Limestone Cross Country Meet on Thursday, October 1 will be asked to pay a participation fee of $10.00. The school and our School Advisory Council (SAC) are contributing toward the overall cost of the event in order to keep participation affordable for families.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

GPS Terry Fox Walk, Run & Roll!

Our annual Terry Fox Walk, Run & Roll is here!

We set a fundraising goal of $1,000 this year after raising $920 last year.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our Glenburnie families and community, we are currently sitting at:

$1,430 raised!

We have already surpassed our goal by more than $400!

Thank you to everyone who has donated and helped us support cancer research while continuing Terry Fox's incredible legacy.

Families who would still like to contribute can use our school fundraising page:

Thank you, Grizzlies. What a fantastic response from our community!

A Few Important Reminders

Morning Arrival, Supervision & Parking

Morning supervision begins at 9:00 a.m. Students should not arrive on school property before that time, as staff supervision is not available.

Our parking lot can become very busy during arrival and dismissal. Please drive slowly, watch carefully for students and families, and keep areas required by school buses clear.

After-School Playground Use

If you are picking up your child at the end of the day, please continue to have children wait until all buses have departed before heading to the playground equipment.

During dismissal, staff need to be able to quickly account for students and make sure everyone travelling by bus has boarded safely.

Once the buses have left, families are welcome to use the playground. Pasted markdown

Changes to After-School Plans

If your child's regular dismissal routine is changing, please contact the school before 3:00 p.m.

After 3:00 p.m., our office and classroom staff are very busy preparing students for dismissal, and we cannot guarantee that a late phone call, email or message will reach your child in time. Pasted markdown

Attendance & Punctuality

Regular attendance and arriving on time make a real difference for students.

Morning supervision begins at 9:00 a.m. and classes begin at 9:10 a.m. Arriving on time helps students settle in with classmates and participate in classroom routines and learning from the beginning of the day.

We recognize that illness, appointments and family circumstances will sometimes make absences unavoidable. If attendance becomes challenging for your child, please reach out so we can work together to support them. Pasted markdown

Reporting Student Absences – SafeArrival

Please remember to report all student absences and late arrivals through SchoolMessenger SafeArrival.

Families can use the SchoolMessenger app, online portal or automated telephone system.

SchoolMessenger SafeArrival Portal

Telephone: 1-855-257-9349

SafeArrival is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and future absences can be entered in advance.

Whenever possible, please use SafeArrival rather than calling the school directly. Students arriving after 9:10 a.m. should check in at the office before going to class. Pasted markdown

Food, Celebrations & Allergy Safety

We ask families not to send food or treats into school for birthdays, holidays or classroom celebrations.

With allergies, dietary restrictions and medical needs within our school, food brought in for sharing can create unnecessary risks.

Glenburnie is also a nut-aware school. Due to serious allergies in our school community, please do not send foods containing peanuts or tree nuts.

Thank you for helping us keep celebrations safe and inclusive for everyone. Pasted markdown

Volunteering at Glenburnie

We are always grateful for family and community members who are willing to share their time with our students.

Throughout the year, there may be opportunities to help with field trips, classroom activities, school events, extracurricular activities and recess clubs.

We would also love to hear from people who have a hobby or skill they might be interested in sharing with students — crafts, games, puzzles, music, dance, knitting, skipping, yoga and much more.

If you are interested in helping, please contact the school or our Volunteer Coordinator, Heidi Carfa at 613-331-2852. Pasted markdown

Student Accident Insurance

Limestone District School Board requires students participating in extracurricular activities to have accident insurance coverage.

Families may use their own existing coverage for expenses not covered by the Provincial Health Plan or purchase Student Accident Insurance through Reliable Life Insurance Company.

Coverage may help with costs such as dental injuries, fractures and other expenses that may not be covered by OHIP or a family workplace benefit plan.

Families are encouraged to review their current coverage and determine what works best for them.

A Great Start to October

October is off to a wonderful start at Glenburnie.

Between seeing so many families at our Open House, celebrating some outstanding student achievement through our EQAO results, and watching our community surpass our Terry Fox fundraising goal, there is already a lot to be proud of.

What stands out most is the way students, staff, families and our School Advisory Council continue to work together to support our school. Whether it is helping with an event, providing resources, volunteering, fundraising or simply encouraging our students each day, all of those contributions make a difference.

Thank you for continuing to be such an important part of the Glenburnie community.

Have a wonderful weekend, Grizzlies!
